NIEL JONKER

Niel Jonker has been a full-time artist since 2005, and is a trained sculptor who paints prolifically en plein-air.

Working with the landscape as a medium of representation has found broad applications. Recent earthen sculptures are constructed from site-specific wild clay. Plein air painting outdoors has been a focus for over a decade. Participation in land art symposiums over the years have introduced communal activities shared with other artists. And as a pioneering artisan breadmaker Niel has made significant contributions over the years when working with agriculturists and artisans, while activating and developing countless home bakers in their practice.

2019 saw Niel expand his workshop offers to facilitate group outdoor painting workshops for artists, as well as developing art teaching on primary school level. He also tutors individually.

In 2020 Jonker’s mentorship and creative output continues to consider representations of landscape in multiple inter-disciplinary applications.

Jonker works and exhibits prolifically. He exhibits throughout South Africa in galleries and at festivals such as the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival and the Grahamstown National Arts Festival. Since embarking on a full time art career in 2004 he has established a cohesive body of oil paintings in various genres, mainly plein air landscape painting, and figurative bronze sculpture which was his training.
