Catherina Pagani
Catherina is a sculptural ceramist and works with clay bodies that are based on
the wild kaolin that is found on the South Peninsula where she lives.
Her work is most often naturally related to aspects of landscape and earth formations.
Catherina was born in 1961. She discovered her love for clay at school, and after
attending an Applied Arts college settled in Cape Town in 1981. She established a studio
and started working intensively with clay in 1996.
Attracted by the sculpture of the early
20th century and an aesthetic of understated simplicity, she explored different ways of
creating form. The inherent qualities of the material itself became a primary focus and
source of inspiration.
Working with natural minerals and high temperatures to reveal their
character remains a field of continuous research, which includes kiln construction,
formulating clay and glaze compositions, and firing with wood. The contrasts along the
flame paths are the language that makes the clay and the form speak of themselves.
