SUE KAPLAN

"Painting is my meditation and my confidante. It is a soothing balm from the woes of the world, and although sometimes a struggle to juggle, its capacity for what It can evoke, spurs me on. It’s about timelessness and finding balance and listening to podcasts and excavating a voice. it’s about finding silence and colour and space. When I find my groove, I do enjoy riding the wave. Then a million other feelings happen…. then I dust myself off and tighten my apron strings again.

Recently, I have been thinking about pathos and how to convey it. Paints' visceral materiality helps me find the nuggets, no matter how prosaic the subject matter is. I paint in a fairly intuitive way, like a sort of diary; more impulse than rigour, but still engaging in my values and identity in the moment. I’m grateful for the time I have been given and for the trust of my students, who form a continuous part of the dialogue and by default, are wonderful extensions of the workings of my rambling creative processes. I take inspiration from them, too. I love that the one practice overlaps with the other. Most of this recent work I have been making is made in response to encounters, sensations and explorations in my life and my broader circle, including my students.

I have an MAFA from Wits; an Honours Degree in Curating from UCT; a BAFA from UNISA, an Adv Dip in FA from Wits; as well as Art Therapy and Zen Coaching courses. I have worked in many different communities, spanning such diversity as Katlehong Art Centre in the 80s, to LISOF in the 2000s. I have run numerous workshops practicing Art Therapeutic modalities, and have worked in various addiction centres and educational institutions. Us humans have an infinite capacity for reinvention rejuvenation and reinterpretation. Proud of that."
