Born in Namibia and raised in South Africa, Sonja is a South African artist whose work is deeply rooted in movement, rhythm, and the living energy of the natural world. Though not formally trained, she developed her artistic practice through mentorships with both local and international artists, refining her own visual language over the years. In early 2024 she moved into her full-time studio, where she now works mainly in oils, exploring new techniques and directions while remaining true to her central theme of movement as the pulse of life. Her work has been exhibited in group shows in South Africa, and her distinctive abstract and impressionist style continues to grow in resonance and recognition.

 

Her paintings are about movement and the dance of life that weaves through every experience, from joy to struggle, from nature’s rhythms to human stories. She often work in oils, letting the fluidity and texture guide her, whether in abstract forms, landscapes, or more figurative impressions. Growing up in Namibia and living in South Africa has deeply shaped her artistic voice. The landscapes, light, and contrasts of both places remain within her brushstrokes.

 

Although she was never formally trained, she sought out knowledge and inspiration through courses, mentorships, and exchanges with artists locally and abroad. These encounters taught her to trust exploration, and today, her full-time studio practice is where she continues that search, always discovering, layering, and refining. She paints very intuitively and tries not to overthink her paintings in order to keep them spontaneous.

 

For her, painting is not static: it is a living process, an unfolding dance of energy, memory, and movement on canvas.
