Shelley Cowling is a Cape Town-based contemporary artist working from her studio in Kalk Bay. Her paintings celebrate the quiet beauty of architecture, gardens, landscapes and everyday places, transforming familiar surroundings into expressive reflections on belonging and the poetry of daily life.

Originally trained as a goldsmith, Shelley spent many years designing and handcrafting bespoke jewellery under her brand, Shelley & Harry. That sensitivity to craftsmanship continues to inform her painting practice, while acrylic and mixed media have allowed her work to become increasingly intuitive and expressive.

Working quickly and instinctively, Shelley responds to the rhythm, colour and character of ordinary places. Rather than documenting a location, she seeks to capture its spirit, inviting viewers to pause, notice and rediscover beauty in the familiar.

Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across Cape Town and continues to explore the enduring relationship between place, light and lived experience.

​I am continually drawn to the beauty that exists within ordinary places.Whether painting a building, a garden, a pool or a vase of flowers, I am interested in the details that give a place its character and quietly connect us to it.Rather than striving for exact representation, I use expressive colour, loose brushwork and intuitive mark making to capture how a place feels rather than simply how it looks. Each painting develops through observation and instinct, allowing unexpected relationships to emerge as the work unfolds.Many of the places I paint hold personal significance, yet I hope they remain open enough for viewers to bring their own experiences to them.If someone leaves one of my paintings seeing the familiar with fresh eyes, then I feel the work has done its job.
