SHAUN BLATCHER
Shaun was born in England in 1961 and currently lives beside the sea in Cape Town. He studied fine art at the Byam Shaw in London.
He went on to work as a commercial sculptor for movies, theatres and exhibitions in London and Europe. He also created silver-smithed jewellery including brooches used by Marie Claire and Vivienne Westwood. Shaun's commissioned silver-smithed Art Nouveau pieces are in the first Mission Impossible movie, and his art work in the Cape Town private jet lounge was used in the action film 24 hours to live.
Shaun's mixed media art work is held in private collections internationally, as well as in many corporate collections including Sandton Sun, Sumitomo, Rio Tinto, Bravura, Odyssey Capital Managers, Itec, Foskor, Alstom, Daniel Group, Capital Works and the Cape Town International Private Jet lounge.
Shaun's work is abstract, multilayered and textured. It ranges from very big, bold and intensely coloured pieces to small, fine work with ink on paper.
ABOUT SHAUN'S WORK
My work is inspired by the rawness of the South African landscape, and the rhythms and pulse of city life. How does our ancestry, raw nature and modern city life co-exist in our being? In our soul? How do they talk to each other? And what is our dance between these different worlds.
My work is a journey. It is about discovering, excavating, and revealing hidden aspects.
ABOUT THE INK & PAPER PIECES
In this series I explore my journey through the African landscape, both internally, and physically through the materials that I collected on these travels. I try to capture the essence and rawness of some special locations - ancient forests and lakes, sacred rivers and caves, and of course the sea.
