The two works included in this exhibition originally came from a body of work entitled ‘Nothing Human’, produced during a Postgraduate Diploma at Michaelis in 2024.

Making use of an archive of family photographs, the images on which the paintings are based comprise a series depicting a day somewhere in South Africa during the 1940’s at a dam. There are friends, a dog, at least one gun, a day in the sunshine.

The works were both made up of two separate paintings each, painted on drafting film and placed one over the other, producing a layered and somewhat ambiguous image. The themes of the works and the body to which they belong are those of memory, intergenerational history and inheritances, disconnection and loss in human relationships.

My hope is that, though the form of the work has changed, something of the layeredness of the original paintings remain, allowing the viewer to feel a sense of the tensions involved in human relationships: the desire for intimacy and knowing, as well as the ambiguity of distance and uncertainty.
