NATALIE PENDERIS

Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, the artist studied Art and Design before developing a distinctive visual language shaped by nature, the journey of the soul, and the interplay of mixed media.

Drawing on formalist influences, the work is characterised by muted colours arranged in an uneven yet carefully balanced composition. Through these restrained palettes and textured surfaces, the artist conveys emotion, explores identity, and captures the subtle presence of light.

The practice seeks to create a soulful expression of creativity—something rarely encountered in much contemporary work. By combining classic and contemporary materials, the artist constructs layered compositions that evoke a wide spectrum of feeling, from foreboding and despair to hope and rapture.

Influenced by both formalist and naïve tendencies, the artist has developed a distinctive approach to texture using concrete and mixed media. Natural pigments, acrylic, and engraving techniques are integrated to produce surfaces with a subtle three-dimensional quality.

An accomplished international artist, a significant portion of the artist’s career was spent living and working in the United Arab Emirates. The work continues to be exhibited in Dubai, while maintaining a visible presence in Cape Town galleries and undertaking commissioned projects internationally. The artist is currently based in the United Kingdom.

In 2006, the artist received the prestigious Sheikha Manal’s Young Artist Award: New Signatures, with the winning work exhibited by Christie’s at the opening of its first Middle Eastern auction.
