MICHELLE RANDALL

Michelle Randall is a multidisciplinary artist based in Cape Town’s Southern Peninsula. Her practice is process-led and exploratory, with material experimentation at its core.

Her background in film and production design shapes how she builds an image, breaking a view into frames or parts and reassembling them to bring different perspectives, materials and moments into conversation.

Place is central to Randall’s work. She is interested in how a space can hold different feelings at once, and how memory changes our experience of it. She leaves these tensions visible rather than resolving them, exploring what we notice, what stays with us, and how we negotiate space.

Michelle Randall's work is featured in our current exhibition, The Architecture of Leisure, exploring the everyday spaces of rest, pleasure and connection.

Statement of work: Journal I and Journal II

Journal I and Journal II explore how memory shapes our experience of place. Each work is an act of recollection: the forest appears as an assembly of partial moments rather than a single, fixed view, with each frame carrying its own story within a larger narrative.

Individually printed panels are arranged and stitched by hand. The seams remain visible, holding the landscape together without making it entirely whole.

Material unpredictability is integral to the works. Raw canvas receives the ink unevenly, while repeated printing wears down the plates and gradually shifts the image, so the forest never settles into a definitive view.

Embroidered symbols appear across the surface like annotations or marginalia, suggesting the private meanings we place over remembered spaces, and our attempts to locate or hold onto an experience.
