MICHE FABRE LEWIN
Artist Statement.
I am a White Zimbabwean woman with French and Jewish heritage working between Europe and Africa. My body of work is an elemental re-membering of ‘rta’, the Sanskrit root of art, artisan and ritual. Rta returns us to re-cognising our humanness as being in continuous evolution within a participatory, interdependent worldmaking. As an artist-of-the-becoming my re-search unfolds within this life-affirming, connective ethos of making-with the animate world and is in co-creative processes with the sentience of matter, the agency of living principles, and the honouring of psyche and soma.
Tasting Ubuntu Chronicles is a limited edition of photoprints drawn from a large scale assemblage. This mixed media visual artwork was composed from newspapers, found and recycled materials as well paint and markmaking. It was one of the manifestations of the collaborative Artist Residency Tasting Ubuntu hosted by research centres AVReQ and CST at Stellenbosch University during 2024-2025. The Residency itself was located within the Stellenbosch University Museum where the Annex Studio hosted encounters in collaboration, forums of inspiration and food ritual practices.
