Kenneth Shandu is a South African contemporary artist based in Durban who works with drawings, prints, sculptures, and light installations. His art primarily addresses themes of social exclusion, displacement, and the deconstruction of Black identity, focusing on the lived experiences of economically marginalized communities such as informal traders, the homeless, and smallholder farmers.

For my mother, the field was an extension of home a place of work, rest, belonging and
connection with the earth. Through ukulima, farming becomes a relationship of care, where what
is taken from the soil is returned through a continuous cycle of planting, harvesting and
decomposition. This contrasts with mining, which treats the land primarily as a resource for
extraction. Through images of my mother and siblings working in the field, I explore this
relationship by scratching photographs of my family members into perspex glass, making their
presence subtle and almost invisible, like memory and indigenous knowledge.
