KAREN STEGEN
Karen Stegen is a mixed-media abstract artist based in Hilton, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Creativity has always been woven into Karen's life, from gardening, sewing, cooking, and flower arranging to painting. After spending years in a restrictive environment that left a lasting impact, she turned to art as a way to reconnect with herself and rediscover the freedom she had lost.
Working intuitively with acrylics, oils, pastels, and mixed media, Karen allows each piece to evolve naturally without rigid planning. Inspired by the beauty and symbolism of flowers, her work explores the balance between chaos and calm, where spontaneous marks and vibrant colour gradually give way to harmony, peace, and stillness.
For Karen, art is more than a creative practice—it's a place of healing, freedom, and self-expression.
Every painting reflects her journey toward contentment and serves as an invitation for others to pause, connect with nature, and find beauty in the unexpected.
Art has become the place where I am most free.
After years of living in a controlled environment, I found myself searching for a way to reconnect with who I truly was. Sketching and painting became that path. What began as a way to find solace soon grew into a deeply personal journey of healing, self-discovery, and creative freedom.
I work intuitively, allowing each painting to unfold without a predetermined plan. Using acrylics, oils, pastels, and mixed media, I follow colour, texture, and instinct rather than expectation. My inspiration comes largely from nature—especially flowers—which embody resilience, beauty, and quiet transformation.
Through my process, I embrace the unexpected. Out of layers, movement, and apparent chaos, I seek to create a sense of balance, peace, and stillness.
I don't paint to meet expectations or follow trends. I paint because it is where I feel most authentic. My hope is that my work offers viewers a moment of calm and reminds them that beauty can emerge from even the most unpredictable journeys.
