HERMIEN VAN DER MERWE
Wildly Indigenous is rooted in a deep connection to the Cape fynbos — a biome shaped by wind, fire, drought, and time, largely endemic to the southern coast of South Africa and found nowhere else on earth. Inspiration is gathered on foot, walking through the fynbos-rich landscapes of Table Mountain, where proteas, restios, ericas, and bulbous plants grow freely, exactly as nature intends. These indigenous wildflowers resist control or arrangement; they respond to the seasons and return with renewed force after fire. This sense of divine order within apparent wildness is central to the work.
The paintings are not botanical studies but expressive responses. Working intuitively with bold, sometimes wild brushstrokes, shapes and colours are deliberately simplified. Through composition, the natural chaos is gently tempered — creating balance, rhythm, and structure without losing the plants’ inherent energy and freedom.
By slowing down and looking closely, the fynbos reveals its quiet complexity, which these works seek to amplify, allowing indigenous plants to stand tall and alive.
Included in the exhibition is a single Karoo landscape, offering a more expansive counterpoint to the density of the fynbos works. Inspired by a longstanding love for the Karoo and a renewed connection to land now regularly returned to, this painting is defined by a restrained palette of ochres and pale tones.
Together, the works reflect different expressions of wildness within South Africa’s natural heritage. Wildly Indigenous is ultimately a reflection on belonging - an invitation to honour the wild beauty that shapes our visual memory and sense of home, wherever we may carry it.

Fynbos Vase with Agapanthus and Everlastings
Collaboration with Maureen Visage.
H 34 x W 32 cm

"Fynbos Vase with Agapanthus and Everlastings is a collaborative ceramic artwork created by Maureen Visagé and Hermien van der Merwe, inspired by the delicate beauty and quiet strength of the Cape fynbos.
Maureen hand-built the vessel in her studio, shaping the clay to give the vase its balanced, sculptural form. Once the clay reached a leather-dry state, it became a canvas upon which Hermien painted a composition of Agapanthus and Everlastings, drawn to their soft blue hues and pale, luminous tones that evoke the cool light and open skies of the Cape landscape. Using underglazes, she built up the colours in layers, allowing subtle shifts and depth to emerge through the firing process".
