GINA NIEDERHUMER

_edited.jpg)

Gina Niederhumer is a recent Masters graduate from Michaelis School of Fine Arts.
Although her work is often very personal and appears fragile, dealing with issues surrounding family history and what it means to live between two worlds, Austria and South Africa...she also has this side to her work where she explores colour and stitches in a playful way, using often her journal entries or just arbitrary snippets someone said as departure points to appliqué her stitched pictures. Her work oeuvre spreads from large textile collages to gigantic fabric sharks and whales to little stitched jewellery and altered books, embroidered photographs and assemblages of found objects...there is always a story behind and very often needle and thread is involved.
During the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, Niederhumer painted on pizza boxes that were accumulating in her house. Niederhumer also participated in Home is Where the Art is, and group exhibition at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) showcasing a multitude of creatives working and living in Cape Town.
Gina lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa.
