ELIZABETH MILLER VERMEULEN
Elizabeth is an established visual artist and independent curator based in Somerset West.
She has exhibited extensively in group exhibitions and solo exhibitions and has curated and co-curated numerous noteworthy group exhibitions, including the Stellenbosch University Centenary exhibition Forward? Forward! Forward... (2018) and 100 Geographies, commissioned by the SSAG (2016), both at the Stellenbosch University Museum. She also
curated Points of Departure during Solo Studios (2022) in Riebeek Kasteel, where she collaborated with Emma Willemse (conceptual artist) and Rudolph Willemse (photographer). Elizabeth’s own passion for photography is evidenced by the inclusion of her work in the Lagos Photo Festival: Home Museum (2020) exhibition.
Elizabeth has been actively involved in community and academic art projects and curated the Science Meets Art project exhibition at the Rupert Museum, Stellenbosch, in 2020. She has also managed commercial and community-orientated galleries.
After studying art at Stellenbosch University majoring in painting, drawing and art education, she worked as an illustrator and book designer/typographer at Human & Rousseau publishers. Elizabeth started working as a fulltime artist in 2002. She balances her own studio time/creative process with art projects and curation in support of established
and emerging artists.
After relocating, the artist finds herself surrounded by nature, impacting on her perspective
and approach to her art-making. Her focus remains driven – always learning and discovering
more – an integral part of her creative process.
