DOMINIQUE ALBINSKI

Dominic Albinski (b. 1975, Johannesburg) is a sculptor based in Kalk Bay whose work explores African wildlife, the natural world, and the emotional complexity of the human experience. Working primarily in clay and bronze, his sculptures are rooted in African visual narratives while carrying themes that resonate across cultures and geographies.

Albinski began sculpting at a young age under the mentorship of art educator Mercia Desmond, developing an early affinity for form and material. His formative years were marked by a deep connection to Africa’s landscapes and wildlife—an influence that remains central to his practice today. Early exposure to international sculpture further shaped his artistic language, including time spent working alongside sculptor James Butler in England.

Following his schooling at St John’s College in Johannesburg, Albinski pursued further studies in Paris and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. His early career was established in Europe, with initial exhibitions in France, before expanding to international platforms. His work has since been exhibited in Johannesburg, Paris, New York, and Florence, including the presentation of Madness at the 2023 Florence Biennale.

Albinski’s sculptural vocabulary ranges from intimate animal forms—such as Stretching Cat, Rat, and Peacock—to larger, emotionally charged works including The Rose and Madness. His practice also embraces humour and play, evident in pieces such as Zulu Warrior and his vibrant figurative nudes. While animals feature prominently, they function as symbolic vessels rather than literal representations, carrying layered interpretations and personal narratives.

Influenced by artists including Alberto Giacometti, Pablo Picasso, and Auguste Rodin, Albinski balances expressive gesture with structural clarity. His work is driven by the belief that art should provoke feeling and reflection—whether through beauty, discomfort, or quiet resonance.

In addition to his sculptural practice, Albinski is the author of the autobiographical novel Stories My Father Never Told Me. He has received several international accolades, including Art Tour International Magazine’s Artist of the Decade (2019/2020) and Artist of the Future from Art Curator Magazine.

Albinski continues to expand his practice through travel, cultural exploration, and an ongoing pursuit of timeless, emotionally resonant sculpture.
