Artist's Statement.
I am an artist passionate about sculpture, driven by a need to share my most intimate experiences through artworks that express my inner being. My creations reflect discoveries made during travels across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, with themes deeply rooted in my love for nature, people, African wildlife, and my childhood in Africa. I believe that a deep empathy for humanity fuels the need to create, and this sensitivity allows me to channel my experiences into clay and bronze, giving my sculptures a universal and timeless quality. Africa is central to my work, yet my sculptures carry messages transcending place and time, resonating with audiences in cities like Paris and New York. I draw inspiration from my father, childhood friends, first art teacher Mercia Desmond, and renowned artists like Giacometti, Picasso, Rodin, and others. My foundational training in sculpture taught me to love my materials, beginning with my first rhino sculpture with James Butler in England and my first elephant sold in France. For me, touching and shaping clay is a thrill that fuels my creative journey. My work, while known for its depiction of animals, extends beyond representation to imbue unique interpretations, breathing life into each piece and making them distinctly contemporary. Whether monumental works like The Rose or Madness, character studies like Agnes or Zulu Warrior, whimsical pieces like Peacock or Stretching Cat, or my wildlife sculptures, all reflect my love for adventure and hunger for growth. My art conveys the joy of creation, the wonder of the universe, and the value of finding meaning through beauty and shared human experiences. Moving forward, I aspire to expand my audience, explore new cultures, deepen my use of color and detail, and create works that are contemporary, eternal, and timeless.
