MICHELLE RANDALL

Michelle Randall is a Cape Town based painter and printmaker. She primarily works in oils, drypoint and linocut. To her practice, she brings a cinematic lens that explores urban environments and atmospheric matter as informed by her background in film.

With a BA Honours (AFDA), she has previously worked as a production designer in the film industry. Today Michelle works as a Content Director for a global creative agency whilst simultaneously developing her independent practice as an artist from her studio in Noordhoek.

Kalk Bay Station, a drypoint print was created by utilising multiple hand-carved plates cut from repurposed Tetra Pak. Every plate was drawn by hand and etched individually; thereafter joined together to form a complete composition. This made allowance for the seams and misalignments to merge into the final image.

Subject matter and material considerations were executed with careful thought. With each impression, Randall's plates wore down resulting in a softer image that echoes the rhythmic atmosphere and impermanence that characterises a space such as Kalk Bay Station.

“I’m drawn to interiors, everyday objects, and the built environment, especially structures and forms that hold a kind of emotional architecture. These are not just spaces we move through or objects we use; they also hold us. They carry stillness, anticipation, and memory. Quiet moments that often go unnoticed, but linger long after we’ve passed through.”
