IAN PELLS
Based in Cape Town, South Africa, I am a ceramic artist and educator whose work bridges the gap between traditional craft and technical material science. With decades of experience in the arts and education, my practice is defined by an analytical approach to ceramic surfaces and a commitment to sustainable studio innovation.
Holding a Master’s degree in Fine Art and a professional background in linguistics, I bring a unique conceptual lens to my work, often exploring how materials "speak" through texture and form. My current projects focus on the development of specialised glaze chemistries and the integration of industrial binders into sculptural ceramics, reflecting a career-long dedication to both the artistry and the chemistry of the medium.
Artist Statement
My work explores the intersection of raw material and technical precision, rooted in a deep fascination with the transformative power of the kiln. With a practice centered on the alchemy of glaze chemistry and the tactile nature of high-temperature firing, I focus on the dialogue between intentional design and the organic unpredictability of earth and fire.
I am particularly drawn to the development of custom glazes—ranging from the subtle textures of alkaline surfaces to the dramatic, visceral qualities of volcanic effects. Whether working through slip casting or the immersive process of wood-firing, my goal is to highlight the inherent intelligence of the materials. By integrating sustainable practices and innovative binders into traditional ceramic frameworks, I seek to create pieces that feel both architecturally grounded and conceptually fluid.
Ultimately, my practice is an ongoing investigation into materiality and circularity, pushing the boundaries of what clay can convey about our relationship with the physical world.
