RENE JOHANSEN

Rene Johansen is an artist living and working in Cape Town, South Africa. Her frequent travels to The United Kingdom influence her search into landscapes
‘My paintings seek to explore the essence of land, place, and belonging. Their dreamlike qualities reference a place one cant quite put their finger on but inherently know. It speaks to the connection that we as humans hold with the landscape.
Our relationship with the natural world is often strained in society, keeping and developing networks is vital to my process.
The process often starts with an intense searching for scenes within a landscape. This takes place in everyday life, collecting visual imagery as I go. I then go back to my studio and work largely from the memory of these scenes. This gives me the chance to reinterpret the landscape, focussing on the areas of genius loci or the spirit of the place.
The hazy paintings allow one to lose themselves in a mental reverie. Like a daydream, they are open to individual interpretation.’
