LUC VAN DER WALT

Luc is an abstract painter with a studio space in Noordhoek, Cape Town.
With a degree in Fine Art from Nelson Mandela University, he has travelled across Africa and the Middle East, using art as a medium to work with vulnerable communities, including conflict-affected territories and refugee camps. Working with children’s innate creativity lead him to found the non-profit organization Flowers for Africa.
Since 2022, this social work has taken a back seat to make room for a new focus, his own artwork.
After many years of travel, today Luc's primary source of inquiry is his inner landscape.
Aside from meditation and spiritual journeys, the creative process is a direct avenue into this vast
and unexplored space.
Luc describes his process - 'I create the way I travel: when starting a painting, my mission is to let go completely and get lost. Finding myself in new and unexpected places, I begin to explore, not knowing what I’ll find. Shapes, colours and textures speak to me in strange languages. I return from these deep
terrains with physical artefacts to be displayed' .
“I make my own paint by collecting stone from around the southern peninsular.
I grind the stone up into a paste and add a water based adhesive so that when it dries it’s as strong and long lasting as paint. I came to doing this as I like how it cracks when it dries and erodes when I sand, scrape or scrub it. The outcome is unpredictable and has a quality that is in line with how things are in the world.”
