CHAS UNWIN
Began painting in Kalk Bay 2000, age 44, theatre-maker and writer newly arrived from Johannesburg with family. Working as an art educator (Iziko National Gallery) then as news sub-editor I was free to let it happen, be surprised at what painting does without pre-conceived image. Since 2013 six solo shows in private spaces. ‘Raw painting’ says a meticulous realist painter friend, ‘it works but I don’t know how.’ If I knew I'd likely give up. Each a surprise, an investigation into what’s happening. As in life so in art. Dream theatre, moon lightning. Borderlands where ghosts hide out among clowns.
